Smart Phone Web Use

Accessing the internet is becoming effortless through the use of smartphones. Nowadays most Americans would use their phones for the internet and apps rather than to make an actual phone call. Pew Internet & American Life Project reported studies showing that two-thirds of cell-phone owning Americans use their cell phones to surf the Web and check things like emails and social media. This is double the amount from 2009 in which only thirty one percent of cell phone users used their phone for online purposes.  The age groups of 18-29 year olds still are the dominate users of web accessing, but there has been an increase in the 50-64 year old group in online phone using.  With these smart phones getting faster (3G or 4G), screens getting sharper and apps improving, it is making it easier for the consumer to access the web faster. A question arises whether it would be difficult to revert back to a phone that does not have apps or web access after being a smart phone user...

  1. I think it would be really difficult to revert back to a phone that is not a smartphone. People become reliant upon these tools and use to the ability to access the web anytime they want. We are creatures of habit. If you take something that has become habit away from us humans, they will have a very difficult time adjusting to the new, or in this case old, technology.

  2. I completely agree with this article. Smartphones are so much more handy as you have access to the internet whenever you want. I thought it was interesting that you stated, there has been an increase in online phone usage among the 50-64 year old age group. I think it would be difficult to change back to a phone without apps or web access after using one that has those capabilities.

  3. I have actually debated going back to just a regular cellphone instead of keeping my smartphone. I love the convenience of a smartphone and how I have the internet in my hands, but I find that smartphones have been the downfall of productivity. I know that when my phone has died and I have to leave it somewhere to charge, I get so much more done and am not checking my instagram or facebook or texting people all the time. I have no doubt that it would be difficult to go back to a regular phone, but I really want to do it just for the sake of not clinging to it; especially in social situations.
